Description

We will deepen our knowledge and skills in Kizomba ("Kizomba Tradicional") – a music genre and soulful partner dance from Angola that has captivated dancers worldwide. Kizomba grew out of Semba and other influences, and later inspired newer forms such as UrbanKiz. Today, the term "Kizomba" is also often used as an umbrella term for related and similar music and dancing styles like Semba, Kizomba / "Kizomba Tradicional", UrbanKiz, Tarraxo, Tarraxinha, Kompa / Konpa, etc.

In this course we focus on the authentic, original form - Kizomba ("Kizomba Tradicional"): https://www.facebook.com/share/v/14JfMGaXmV6 (see example video here). Kizomba isn’t about memorising longer, fixed sequences (as for example in Salsa), but about leading and following a small set of simpler steps and variations that you then combine freely — more alike to the improvisation style in Tango Argentino. This way, you can start enjoying the dancefloor quickly: creating a good dance flow without having to memorise longer figures.

You will learn:

  1. Combinations of steps, blocks/stops, and lean figures
  2. How to refine your posture, as well as finding your own "Ginga"
  3. How to refine lead and follow techniques to achieve the desired dance flow

You should be familiar with:

  1. Basic steps (On-Place, Side-to-Side, etc., Closing-the-step vs Rockstep), as well as Saída da mulher (Woman Saida), Saída do homem (Man Saida), Retrocesso, typical Passada
  2. Posture: both alone and with a partner, with or without chest connection
  3. Dance flow: move naturally with your partner with simple steps and enjoy the music with confidence
  4. Lead & follow techniques: fundamentals of communication through body language
